Decoding the Map Numbers

The first alphanumeric character in the map name represents the Township (horizontal axis). The northernmost part of Lincoln County is in Township 6 South (6s). The southernmost end of Lincoln County is in Township 15 South (15s).

The second alphanumeric character in the map name represents the Range (the vertical axis). The westernmost part of Lincoln County is in Range 12 West (12w). The easternmost part of Lincoln County is in Range 8 West (8w).

The third alphanumeric character, if any, in the map name represents the Section within the Township and Range. Sections are generally numbered from 1 to 36 back and forth from the top to the bottom:

The fourth alphanumeric character, if any, represents the Quarter Section within the Section. Quarter Sections are generally numbered from A to D as indicated in picture below (the circled letters).

The fifth alphanumeric character, if any, represents the Sixteenth Section within the Quarter Section. Sixteenth Sections are generally numbered from A to D as indicated in the picture below (the second letter within each box).

Thus, a map numbered "12s11w7bd" would translate as: Township 12 South, Range 11 West, Section 7, Quarter Section B, Sixteenth Section D.

If the map name has the additional indicator "idx" at the end of the map name, this is an indication that the map image contains references to other maps with further detail (for example, map "10s10w09aidx" contains an internal reference to that portion which is detailed on map "10s10w09ab").

Searching the "TIF" Maps

If you are attempting to identify a particular tax lot and you are unsure about which Township and Range the lot is located, start with the main map depicting the various Townships and Ranges within Lincoln County or the color township and range jpeg images (click on thumbnails below for a larger image).

Once you have located the appropriate Township and Range:

1. Go back to the township selection table and click on the appropriate Township link.
2. That will take you to an index of all the maps in that Township. Click on the map with the appropriate Township and Range (for example, map "10s10widx" for Township 10 South, Range 10 West).
3. This map will likely contain references to further detail maps. Find the appropriate detail map and continue to select the appropriate detail map(s) from the Township index until you have located the most detailed map possible (the most detailed map will indicate tax lot numbers on individual lots).
